Steps to make a cushion cover with a zip
You can create or make any type of small or large cushions in no time. Creating these bespoke cushions is much easier than you think if you follow these step-by-step instructions properly. Let’s suppose you are making a 40 cm square cushion. First of all, you need to cut your fabric, so there is an extra 0.5 cm on the edge where the zip will go and 2 cm extra on each side for the hem. You will need two pieces of fabric for one cushion (each piece needs to be 42 cm x 42.5 cm).
Place the right sides together of the fabric of both pieces. Position the zip slider at least 5 cm from the edge and on the top edge that is slightly larger with an extra 0.5 cm. However, you need to hold it in place with a pin. Measure in 5 cm again after laying the zip flat along the top of the cushion.
Important things to take care about
Start pinning up one side of the zip seam and down on the other after turning the fabric over to the correct side. Put your thumb on the notch pin’s position. However, take the pin out by holding it in place from the underside and then put it in the same position on the top side. Repeat it for the second notch pin. Moreover, remove the rest of the pins from the back or underside of the fabric. Plus, you need a regular zip foot to sew. Start on the pivot, top left, across the bottom, and come down.
To unpick the seam (not the fabric), you can use an unpicker at the middle section where you put in the long stitches. Now, look at your zip. You can cut off the extra bottom length of the zip. Put the two pieces of fabric right sides together by keeping the zip open. Make sure to pin the three remaining sides of your cushion and line up the seam at the top. To ensure you get a nice point, cut the two bottom corners off when you turn the cushion cover the other way. However, you can also use a pin to help those corners come out with a clean pointy edge.
