Rights of Wife in Islam

Praise Allah!

Islam imposes duties on a man to his wife and vice versa, and some of these duties are shared between husband and wife.

According to Islam, the family is the small social unit that makes society. This small unit comprises females and males and is enlarged by children’s birth. Family members are closely related and have common goals and interests. Therefore, each member’s happiness depends on the whole family’s happiness.

A wife’s rights that belong only to her:

A wife has financial rights to her husband, including maar (dowry), expenses, and housing.

She has the following non-monetary rights, fair and proper treatment, showing affection, love, respect and not humiliating them.

Monetary rights:

(A) MAHR:

This is the money a wife is entitled to receive from her husband when the marriage contract is concluded or when the marriage is consummated. It is a right that men must pay women. Allah said (interpretation of the meaning):

“And give the woman (whom you marry) wholeheartedly their mar (the obligatory dowry given by her husband to her wife on marriage).”

(Al-Nisa)

The Ordinance of the Mahr shows the seriousness and importance of the marriage contract and is a mark of respect and honor for women.

It was conveyed from Jabir that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said in his farewell sermon:

“Fear Allah concerning women! Indeed you received them in Allah’s safety and, by Allah’s word, permitted you to trade with them. Their right over you is to provide enough clothing and respect them.

Accommodation:

This is also a wife’s right. The husband must provide accommodation according to his ability and ability. Allah said (interpretation of the meaning):

“Place them (divorced women) your way where you live.”

Non-monetary Rights:

(A) Friendly treatment:

A husband should have a good attitude towards his wife, be kind to her, and offer everything that can soften her heart towards him.

Allah Almighty says in Holy Quran:

 “And live well with them.”

“And they (wives) have the same rights (as to husbands as to living expenses) as they (as husbands) should be (as to obedience and respect).”

The Messenger of Allah SWT said:

‘Be kind to women.'”

(Narrated by al-Bukhaari)

He ﷺ enjoined kind treatment and honoring of one’s wife, and he described the best of people as those who are best to their wives. He ﷺ said: “The best of you are those who are the best to their wives, and I am the best of you to my wives.”

He spoke beautifully about treating his wife kindly and said that if a husband feeds his wife and puts a morsel of food in her mouth, he deserves a reward for his charity. He ( Holy Prophet SAW) said:

“You will not spend anything but be rewarded even for the food you put in your wife’s mouth.”

Do not hurt your wife:

 Allah says:

Man is the protector and keeper of a woman.

(Surat Nisa, Ayah 34)

This is one of the basic principles of Islam. It is haram for a stranger to harm another person, significantly if he harms his wife.

How Holy Prophet SAW treated his wives:

The believer’s mother, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was sitting and praying. He would recite the Qur’an when he sat down, and when the rest of the Ayah was his 30 to 40, he would get up and recite them while standing. Then he made Rukh, then Sujud. He then does the same with his second rakat. He looked at my face after prayer, talked to me when I was awake, and lay down when I was asleep. Learn Quran online

Harming her involves harming her physically, and her husband must keep her from harming her mentally. Nevertheless, unfortunately, we see men who use the power Allah has bestowed upon them as her husbands, abuse and slander their wives with constant disapproval, and allow their relatives to oppress them.
