There is a vast range of variability in the shapes, sizes, and colors of nail scissors. To illustrate, nail scissor designed for the toenails are typically much larger than those designed for the fingernails. For your convenience when cutting, scissors are also available in concave and convex shapes. The majority of different types of nail scissors contain the same fundamental components, which include a cutting head, a pressure-regulating lever, and a filing surface.
Frequently Used Nails Instruments
If you don’t go to a salon every time you need your nails clipped, you probably have a nail clipper lying around the house. In point of fact, nail clippers are the household item used most frequently. Even a report that claims 86 percent of men use nail clippers has been brought to our attention. Just give it your best shot to locate a different man’s manicure or pedicure tool that even comes close to matching that number. Despite this, we continue to be astonished by the number of people who use nail clippers in an improper manner. Incorrect use of these tools results in not only unsightly nails but also cuts, infections, and excruciating agony. This is why we cringe a little bit every time we use them.
First things first: before we get into the correct technique to use nail scissors, we need to preface this discussion with our number one pet peeve.
Put an End to Purchasing and Using Nail Scissors Immediately
On the market, you can find a lot more nail scissors for three dollars than you can excellent clippers. The use of a nail clipper that is not of high quality is not only risky but also expensive. It is hazardous because it frequently breaks apart or slips out of your hands while you are clipping, and it is expensive because having to replace the blades frequently (due to the low quality of the blades and how quickly they dull) costs a significant amount more over the course of a lifetime than purchasing one high-quality nail scissors that will last for decades and do a much better job.
The Quality of a Nail Scissor
The quality of the nail scissors can be determined by the steel used and the production process. Solingen steel is a high-carbon steel that does not corrode throughout the course of its lifetime and keeps its edge for decades. Because it is made of thicker steel, nail scissors may be customized to be simpler to handle and more ergonomically sound. They can also be designed specifically for youngsters as well as for the toughest and most thickly grown toenails. Cheap nail cutters tend to break the nail, but premium nail scissors might cut the nail.
How to Properly Use nail Scissors
Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, I’ll go ahead and give you some pointers on how to use nail clippers effectively.
- Avoid cutting your nails too closely together. When it comes to trimming their fingernails and toenails, the vast majority of people make this critical error. Keep your nails with a very modest extension over the nail bed. Ingrown toenails are a painful condition that can be difficult to treat and require excessive cutting to prevent.
- Avoid cutting the sides of your nails with a nail clipper and instead trim your toenails straight across, being sure to leave some of the nails exposed rather than cutting into the flesh. Clippers are not designed to fit into confined places, and using them in these situations will result in injury to the skin that surrounds the nails.
- You should never pull the clipper out of the nail if the initial clip fails to cut the nail. Instead, try cutting the nail a second time at a slightly different position on the tray. If the issue continues to exist, you will require clippers with more powerful blades or sharper blades (for thicker, tougher nails).
- Begin trimming the nail on one side, and continue in the same manner until you reach the opposite side. Do this until you have completed the process.
- Never pull on a hangnail, regardless of the fact that we do not recommend cutting hangnails with clippers. If you do not get a nice cut, you will need a sharper blade or a different instrument. - Raise the lever to its highest position, then rotate it clockwise through 180 degrees, and finally, bring the lever back down near the base of the clippers. It will no longer be possible to clip all the way to the quick since it will be angled at a 45-degree angle relative to the rest of the nail clippers.
- If you are right-handed, hold the nail clippers in your right hand with your thumb on the lever and the base resting against your index finger. If you are left-handed, hold the nail clippers in your left hand with your thumb on the lever. Hold the two handles of the clippers in the palm of your hand and wrap your fingers around them so that you have a comfortable grip that allows you to squeeze the handles together without slipping. If the clippers have a handle that is shaped like pliers, this step is not necessary.
- Wrap the head of the clipper, which is where the cutting blades are placed, around the nail that you want to cut on your finger or toe. Avoid getting the cutting edges too close to the quick, which is the space between the nail and the cuticle that surrounds it.
- Apply pressure to the lever or the handles, taking care to ensure that the head of the clippers does not move while you are working. Maintain the pressure you’ve been applying until the head has completely sliced through the nail. In order to remove wider nails, after making the initial cut, you should shift the head and continue cutting the nail until it is entirely gone.
When the nail scissors leaves behind areas that are too rough, you can use the file that comes with the clippers to smooth them off. Before employing the clippers, the file must be rotated 180 degrees so that it projects out of the back of the clipper assembly, then the lever must be brought to its closed position.
